Hearing the Grass Grow gathers articles, interviews, and reflections on artists and artworks that explore the posthuman, questioning what it means to be human in relation to technology, the environment and non-human life. Inspired by the words of George Eliot on the front cover, reinterpreted through Rosi Braidotti’s contemporary theory, the book invites readers to “listen differently”, to perceive what usually goes unnoticed or silent. The book highlights artistic practices across media, from biotech experiments to immersive digital spaces, that make posthuman experiences visible, showing alternative ways of sensing, connecting, and existing. Acting as a reflective pause, it traces the development of posthuman ideas from the 1990s to today, offering insights and prompts rather than definitive answers. At its core, the project emphasizes art’s power to reveal hidden worlds, to listen beyond the human, and to rethink our place within a deeply interconnected, more-than-human reality.
